Townsend: The Peaceful Side of the Smokies

Not far from the busy streets of Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg, is the peaceful town of Townsend, Tennessee. Over the years, the first three cities grew into large tourist destinations.

However, Townsend remains a small community with just under 500 permanent residents.

The “peaceful” description is appropriate, since Townsend doesn’t have a large number of commercial attractions and entertainment venues. The pace is slower and life is calmer on the peaceful side of the Smokies.

Don’t let the lack of commercial attractions turn you off. It is a fantastic place to go for outdoor activities.

Tubing in the Little Pigeon River is a mainstay of local tourism. Several companies offer tube rentals and buses to drop tubers off up river.

Bicycling is a popular activity here. A bicycle/walking path runs the length of Townsend next to Lamar Alexander Parkway.

Horseback Riding

If you prefer horses to bicycles, we invite you to visit one of the local stables.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

A popular entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park is less than four minutes away. Stay at one of the local hotels or motels and drive to Cades Cove in less than 20 minutes.

Hiking is the number one activity in the park, and Townsend gives you quick access to many of the popular day hikes.
