Beer, Wine, & Spirits

Fourteen places, and almost every one of them pours free tastings. Four sit inside Tanger Outlets alone, Tennessee Cider Co, Tennessee Homemade Wines, Smith Creek Distillery, and Junction 35, which runs a working still next to a kitchen turning out smash burgers, slow-smoked barbecue and shrimp and grits.

Two more anchor Winfield Dunn Parkway: Gatlinburg Brewing Company, whose Schwarz Bear took gold at the World Beer Cup, and Tennessee Legend, where families and leashed dogs are both welcome in the tasting room. Apple Barn Village holds two of its own, a winery pressing fruit from its own orchard, with a window onto production, and a cider house working local apples. Apple Barn Winery and Hillside Winery are both stops on the Rocky Top Wine Trail, and Cades Cove Cellars pours wine slushies on a deck out in Wears Valley.

The moonshine end runs just as deep. Tennessee Shine Co keeps its largest location here, King’s Family Distillery has the national medals, and Shine Girl belongs to Danielle Parton, combat veteran, Dolly’s niece, and the only distiller in town with a stated rule against throat scorchers. When the tasting is done, The Gym Bar & Grill on Dolly Parton Parkway has the patio, the pool tables and karaoke on Fridays.
