Why go: SkyFly hangs you feet first in front of a curved screen roughly 50 feet across and lifts the entire seating deck into the air, not just your chair, for a flight over more than 30 American landscapes with wind, mist, and scent cued to the picture.
About SkyFly: Soar America
This flying theater sits inside The Island in Pigeon Forge, a short walk from the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel. The ride system was built by Dynamic Attractions, the same manufacturer behind the flying theaters at major destination parks, and the scale is the entire point. A machine weighing dozens of tons raises the whole seating deck off the floor while a dome roughly 50 feet across fills your field of vision.
The story wrapped around the hardware is steampunk. You join inventor Peter Wilder and his daughter Hannah aboard an airship they built themselves, and their world plays out across the queue and a preshow that runs about 15 minutes before you reach the ride platform. Treat that preshow as part of the ticket rather than a delay.
The film is proprietary and plays nowhere else. Crews shot it from helicopters and drones at more than 30 locations, among them Niagara Falls, the Everglades, Alaska, Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, and Mount Rushmore. A 2025 update remastered the footage, added 13 new scenes and a new score, and stretched the flight past 10 minutes. Anyone who rode before the middle of 2025 saw a shorter, different show.
Getting to SkyFly: Soar America
The Island sits on the Parkway between traffic lights 3 and 4, where The Island Drive turns off toward the LeConte Center. Parking in the marked lots is free, and the City of Pigeon Forge runs complimentary trams between the main lot and the entrance during operating hours. Once you are on the property, the theater building stands beside the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel and the show fountain, and the route from the lot to the front door is flat, paved, and stroller friendly.
Why Choose SkyFly: Soar America
Pigeon Forge is full of screens and simulators, and most of them move a single chair or a small bank of seats. This is a different class of machine, and the difference registers within the first few seconds of the flight.
- Destination park hardware. The ride system comes from Dynamic Attractions, a manufacturer whose flying theaters anchor major parks, so this is purpose built equipment rather than a repurposed motion box.
- The whole platform moves. Instead of tilting a row of chairs, the ride raises the entire seating deck, drops the floor away, and leaves your feet hanging in open space.
- A film made for this dome alone. The footage was commissioned and shot specifically for this theater, so you are not watching licensed stock scenery that runs at a dozen other venues.
- Wind, mist, and scent. Effects fire on cue with the picture, so the falls actually spray you and the swamp actually smells like a swamp, which is rare outside the big parks.
- Open late and weatherproof. Doors stay open until midnight every night and the whole experience is indoors, so a rainy afternoon or a late arrival does not cost you the visit.
Must Do
The flight moves fast and the effects are timed to specific shots, so it pays to know what is coming. These are the moments worth watching for.
- The Niagara Falls Drop. The screen tips over the edge of the falls and the mist system fires at the same instant, which is the single most talked about beat in the show.
- The Everglades Scent Cue. Scent is piped into the theater as you skim the swamp, one of the few places in the Smokies that uses smell as a story beat.
- The Alaska Seals Sequence. A low pass over ice and open water that the operators themselves call out as a signature shot.
- The Steampunk Preshow. Peter Wilder and Hannah set up the airship premise with real production value, which is why arriving on time actually matters here.
- The Las Vegas and San Francisco Scenes. Both arrived with the extended cut, and they are the clearest reason for anyone who rode years ago to ride again.
What to Expect
This is a motion ride with genuine restrictions, and they are stricter than the family friendly marketing suggests. Read the rules before you buy, especially if anyone in your group is very tall, very small, or prone to motion sickness.
- Height rules run both directions. Riders must be at least 40 inches tall and no taller than 76 inches, and anyone between 40 and 55 inches has to sit beside a responsible adult.
- Health restrictions are broad. The posted rules exclude guests with heart conditions or high blood pressure, back or neck pain, motion sickness or dizziness, epilepsy or sensitivity to flashing lights, claustrophobia, and anyone who is pregnant.
- Non riders have a viewing room. Guests who cannot ride, or would rather not, can watch the film at no extra charge, and staff will run a swap so one adult catches the next cycle. Guests with epilepsy, light sensitivity, or claustrophobia are not admitted to that room either.
- Photography is not allowed. Phones and cameras stay put once you reach the ride platform, and the rule is enforced rather than suggested.
- Pack light. Each seat has a small compartment underneath, but large bags, umbrellas, and walking sticks have to stay with someone who is not riding.
- Seats have published dimensions. Seats measure 18 inches wide with armrests and the belt runs 72 inches, which comfortably fits most guests up to roughly a 52 inch waist.
- Peak queues run long. Waits reach 45 minutes at busy hours and walk up entry times are not always available, so buy online if your afternoon is scheduled.
- Budget 30 to 60 minutes. That covers the queue, the preshow, the safety briefing, and the flight, but not the rest of The Island.
- Food is a short walk away. The Island carries more than a dozen restaurants and snack stops, so this pairs easily with dinner before or after.
