About Board & Brush Pigeon Forge
Board & Brush Pigeon Forge is a DIY wood sign workshop studio on Wears Valley Road, one of 191 locations in a chain that started as a single studio in Wisconsin. This one has been locally owned since 2018 by Lance and Sarah Hans, former teachers turned professional woodworkers whose pieces hang in cabins all over the Smokies. That background shows in how the sessions run: it is a class first and a craft night second.
A workshop is a flat fee that covers everything. Raw wood, a stencil cut to your specifications, stains, paints, wax, hardware, tools, and roughly three hours of step by step instruction are all included. You are guided through sanding, distressing, staining, painting your stencil, and waxing, in that order, and the studio is explicit that no experience is necessary. The catalog runs past 400 designs covering signs, trays, coat racks, boxes, porch signs, doormats, planters, and cornhole sets, most of it in a farmhouse and vintage idiom.
The other half of the appeal is the room itself. Board & Brush Pigeon Forge is a BYOB establishment, so groups bring their own drinks and settle in. That is also why the studio holds a hard line on age: nobody under 16 is permitted in a public workshop while it is running. Families with younger children are not shut out, but they go through the private booking route instead.
Getting to Board & Brush Pigeon Forge
The studio is on Wears Valley Road in Suite 2, directly across the street from McDonald’s. Coming up the Parkway, turn toward Wears Valley at Traffic Light #3 and the studio is a short drive on your right. It sits well off the main Parkway congestion, which makes the arrival much easier than it would be at a Parkway address, though the Wears Valley turn itself can back up on weekend afternoons. Workshops start on time, so give yourself a cushion.
Why Choose Board & Brush Pigeon Forge
Pigeon Forge is thick with attractions you watch and thin on ones you make something at. This is the second kind, and the piece you take home is the reason to pick it over another show ticket.
- You leave with something real. Not a photo and not a souvenir, but a finished piece of decor you sanded, stained and stenciled yourself, dry and ready to hang by the time you walk out.
- Owned by people who actually build things. Lance and Sarah Hans are working woodworkers as well as former teachers, which is a rarer combination than it sounds in a franchise studio.
- Bring your own bottle. The studio does not sell drinks and does not need you to buy theirs. Groups bring what they like.
- Your name goes on it. The custom stencil process puts a surname, monogram, date, or children’s names into a standard design, and simple word substitutions generally cost nothing extra.
- An indoor evening that is not a theater seat. Sessions run Friday and Saturday nights, which fills the slot most Pigeon Forge visitors give to a dinner show.
Must Do
The public calendar runs one format almost exclusively, so the choices you make are about project and occasion rather than which session to book.
- The Pick Your Project Workshop. The standard three hour session and the one to book on a first visit. You choose your design from the full catalog when you register, then pick your stain and paint colors in person once you arrive.
- A Personalized Family Sign. The single most popular use of the custom stencil. Surname, established year, or the names of your children, cut specifically for your board rather than pulled off a shelf.
- A Private Party. The studio books adult parties, bachelorette groups, team building sessions, fundraisers, teen parties for ages 11 to 15, and children’s parties for ages 6 to 10. This is the only way anyone under 16 gets into the studio.
- The Shop Local Storefront. If you cannot get a seat, the studio sells finished signs, trays, doormats, planters, and take home DIY kits outright.
What to Expect
This is a reserved, scheduled activity rather than a drop in attraction, and several of the studio’s rules will genuinely catch a casual visitor out.
- Nobody under 16 in a public workshop. The studio cites the tools, the stains and its liquor license, and says a participant who brings a child will be asked to rebook. Children aged 6 to 10 and teens aged 11 to 15 are welcome, but only through a private booking.
- Pre-registration is required and walk-ins are not accommodated. Seats are not held for unregistered guests or observers, and anyone without their own project will be asked to leave.
- Pick your design when you book, not when you arrive. Your stencil is cut ahead of the session from what you enter at registration, so check your spelling carefully. Colors are the part you choose in the room.
- Wear clothes you do not care about. Oil based stain, paint, wax and sawdust move around the room freely. Leave the good denim and the suede boots at the cabin.
- Arrive early and do not arrive late. Sessions start on time, and anyone more than 20 minutes late may be asked to rebook.
- Plan on about three hours. Sometimes less, sometimes a little more if the room is talkative.
- Cancellations are credits, not refunds. Cancel at least 72 hours ahead and you get a credit good for a year. The studio can also cancel a session that draws fewer than four registrations.
- Real tools are involved. Drills, hammers, mallets, nails, sandpaper and oil based stains are all in use, and the studio asks anyone with a condition that raises their risk of injury or breathing trouble to check in advance.
- Some designs cost more. Most of the catalog is covered by the flat fee, but projects flagged in the booking gallery carry a surcharge the studio does not publish. Check the total before you confirm.
- Accessibility is not published. No accessibility information appears anywhere on the studio’s pages, so call ahead if it matters to your group.
