From Feud to Legacy: The Real Hatfield & McCoy Story Opens in Pigeon Forge
A new attraction dedicated to one of America’s most legendary family rivalries has officially joined the lineup of things to do in Pigeon Forge. The Hatfield & McCoy Experience held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Pigeon Forge Chamber of Commerce on August 11, 2026, marking its presence at a new location in the heart of the city’s Old Mill district.
Owned and operated by Jack Hatfield (Jackie “Jack” Hatfield Jr.), a direct descendant of the famous clan, the attraction offers visitors an authentic look at the Hatfield-McCoy feud through the voices and perspectives of the families themselves.
A True Story Told by Family
Jack Hatfield is the great-great-great-grandson (also described as the 3rd great-grandson) of William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, the patriarch who led the West Virginia Hatfields during the late-19th-century conflict with the McCoys of Kentucky. Unlike theatrical productions or Hollywood dramatizations, this experience focuses on documented history, family stories, and original artifacts.
Visitors move through exhibits and a carefully curated timeline of the feud, complete with storytelling and a self-guided audio tour featuring the families’ own accounts. Displays include historical photographs, personal items, and rotating original artifacts that illuminate the real events, the Civil War-era backdrop, and the Appalachian culture that shaped both families. The goal is to separate fact from folklore while preserving a pivotal piece of mountain heritage.
Hands-On Fun for All Ages
The Hatfield & McCoy Experience blends education with interactive elements designed for families. Guests can explore the museum galleries, take part in a children’s scavenger hunt, and try outdoor gem mining, panning for gems, gold, and other treasures. Photo opportunities abound, allowing visitors to capture memories alongside the historical displays.
A gift shop stocks Hatfield and McCoy themed merchandise, books, apparel, souvenirs, and snacks. Hand-scooped ice cream provides a sweet treat, making the stop appealing for kids and adults alike. The atmosphere is described as warm and welcoming, with friendly service that invites guests to linger and learn.
Future plans include The Devil’s Lightning Moonshine & Bourbon experience, drawing on recipes connected to the historic Hatfield family well at the ancestral homeplace in West Virginia.
Distinct from the Dinner Show
It is important to note that The Hatfield & McCoy Experience is not associated with the popular Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud show. This attraction is a museum-and-heritage center focused on authentic history rather than an entertainment production.
