The Rattler is quickly earning a reputation as a challenging, yet pleasurable motorcycle ride, and a great alternative to the Tail of the Dragon. The motorcycle community seemingly cannot get enough of the The Dragon between Deals Gap, NC and Chilhowee, TN on US-129. Thousands of riders converge on that short 11-mile road each year.

However, the lesser known The Rattler, on NC-209, provides plenty of curves, switchbacks, S-turns, and straightaways.

The bonus: a lack of crowds or danger often associated with the Dragon. Marc and Ann prefer The Rattler over the Dragon. There are far fewer riders, it’s a longer ride, and the scenery is better.

Marc’s Take: “The Rattler is a much better ride than the Dragon. Sure, the Dragon has all the buzz, photographers along the route, and gear shops at the end. However, The Rattler has a similar route feel, but without all the traffic and craziness that surrounds the Dragon.”

With more than 250 twisties, turns, and curves, this route is a rollercoaster for two wheels. It serves up a challenge that will make your heart race and your grin widen. Many riders swear The Rattler outshines the Tail of the Dragon and the Devil’s Triangle, claiming it’s the true test of a biker’s finesse.

Fair warning: you’ll want above-average riding skills to tame this road!

Craving an Extra Shot of Excitement?

Just more than half way to Hot Springs, you arrive in Trust, NC. Trust is a remote little village with an unexpected place to make a pit stop for food. In addition, if you are looking for an exciting detour, turn onto Doggett Mountain Road (NC 63 toward Asheville) for an 8 or 9 mile joyride packed with hairpin turns and twisty challenges. This hidden gem will have you leaning into every curve, feeling like you and your bike are one. It’s a short but spicy addition that’ll leave you buzzing with pure, unfiltered fun.

Hot Springs, NC

After carving through The Rattler and maybe tackling Doggett Mountain, you’ll roll into Hot Springs, North Carolina. After Hurricane Helene, Host Springs is in rebuilding mode. You can still see some of the destruction, but there are places to relax, or grab a bite and a brew, before you head back to Lake Junaluska or ride on to Ashville. Hot Springs’ first craft brewery, Big Pillow Brewing, is right downtown near the French Broad River and is open every day but Monday.
