Cataloochee Ski Area is the Smokies’ original ski destination, open since 1961, offering 18 trails across 50 skiable acres with 100% snowmaking coverage, night skiing, lessons for all ages, and some of the most accessible winter terrain in the Southeast.

About Cataloochee Ski Area

North Carolina’s first ski area, Cataloochee has been welcoming skiers and snowboarders to the Smoky Mountains since 1961. The mountain sits at elevations up to 5,400 feet, with a 740-foot vertical drop and 18 trails covering 50 skiable acres. The trail breakdown includes eight beginner runs, seven intermediate, and three advanced to expert, giving every skill level something worth coming back for. The Cat Cage Terrain Park adds rails, boxes, jibs, and jumps for freestyle riders.

One of the longest ski seasons in the Southeast is made possible by one of the most advanced snowmaking systems in the region, covering 100% of the trail network. Three aerial lifts and two moving carpet lifts serve the mountain, including a new quad ropeway installed for the 2025-26 season. An on-site restaurant, full bar, gift shop, and rental operation keep everything under one roof at the lodge.

Getting to Cataloochee Ski Area

Cataloochee Ski Area is located at 1080 Ski Lodge Road, up the mountain from Soco Road (US-19) in Maggie Valley. Follow the signs from US-19 into the valley and up toward the ski area. The drive from downtown Asheville takes approximately 40 minutes. Cataloochee Ski and Sports, the resort’s valley rental and gear shop, is located at 3434 Soco Road in Maggie Valley and allows you to pick up equipment the evening before your ski day, skipping the on-mountain rental line entirely.

Why Choose Cataloochee Ski Area

Cataloochee’s location in the Smokies makes it the most accessible ski destination for visitors coming from across the Southeast. The mountain is a two-hour drive or less from Knoxville, Greenville, and Spartanburg, and about 40 minutes from Asheville, which means a ski day here does not require a plane ticket or a multi-night stay. The surrounding valley gives non-skiers plenty to do in Maggie Valley and nearby communities, unlike many mountain resorts where the lodge is the only option.

The Indy Pass and Indy+ Pass are both accepted at Cataloochee, making it a smart destination for pass holders who want to combine a Smokies trip with a ski day. Night skiing is available every day of the season, and midweek and night rates are significantly lower than weekend and holiday pricing, rewarding visitors who have scheduling flexibility.

Must Do at Cataloochee Ski Area

  • Take a run down Omigosh. The resort’s 1,000-foot expert run at the top of the mountain is the signature challenge for advanced skiers. Even if it is outside your comfort zone, hike up to the top for the view before heading back down a gentler line.
  • Book lessons for kids through CAT Trackers. The structured kids ski and snowboard program for ages 4 to 12 is well-regarded and takes the pressure off parents trying to teach their own children on the mountain.
  • Pick up rentals at the valley shop the night before. Cataloochee Ski and Sports at 3434 Soco Road lets you rent equipment in advance. Arriving on the mountain already geared up saves significant time on a busy day.
  • Ski midweek or at night if possible. Weekend and holiday crowds are real. Midweek and night rates are lower and the mountain is significantly less congested.
  • Check the snow report before you go. Call (800) 768-3588 or visit cataloochee.com for daily conditions and road conditions on US-19, which can be challenging in heavy snow.

What to Expect

Temperatures at Cataloochee run 10 to 15 degrees colder than in the valley below, so dress in proper layers regardless of what it feels like at your hotel. Slope passes, equipment rentals, and lessons are all separate purchases and can be reserved up to two weeks in advance online. Backpacks, fanny packs, and child carriers are not permitted on lifts or slope systems, so plan to use on-site lockers for any bags.

Holiday periods and weekends bring the largest crowds. Arriving early on peak days is strongly recommended. The adaptive ski program serves adults and children with disabilities and is available by advance arrangement through the ski school. Tube World, the resort’s snow tubing operation, is located separately at 4721 Soco Road in the valley and is a great option for non-skiers or younger children who are not ready for the slopes.
