Maggie Valley’s sweets come out of two small bakeries rather than a candy strip, which means what you get is made rather than merchandised: cakes, pastries, and things you can order ahead for a birthday in a rental cabin.

Both are worth a stop on the way out of the valley. Call ahead if you want something specific. These are genuinely small operations and the good stuff goes early, particularly on weekends and through leaf season.
