Autumn comes alive high above downtown Gatlinburg during Anakeesta’s Bear-Varian Fall Festival, a seasonal takeover running from late August through the first of November. Bavarian-inspired food, craft beer and live entertainment fill the mountaintop villages while the color builds on the ridges below. Pumpkins, scarecrows and harvest décor go up across the park, and the AnaVista Tower and Treetop Skywalk put you above most of the leaves instead of underneath them.

    Live Entertainment Around the Park

The Undead Heads play classic rock with a zombie twist, The Vampirettes work through 1960s hits in vintage vampire style, and The Pretzel-Tones give current songs a polka spin. Gretchen hosts the Bear-Varian Bonanza Games, an interactive show built around Oktoberfest-style challenges, and Hans the stilt walker roams the walkways for photos.

The lineup rotates, so not every act performs every day. If there’s one you want to catch, check the park calendar for your date.

Bavarian Food and the Beer Tasting Card

Food leans hearty. A jumbo pretzel with warm beer cheese at Pretzel Haus, a smoked pork shank with German potato salad at Smokehouse, a crispy pork schnitzel plate at Clifftop, potato pancakes at Bratgarten, and a Bavarian spiral potato with gouda cream and sauerkraut at Tater Tavern. Dessert runs to a warm apple plait, a cinnamon apple crepe and a German chocolate shake.

Guests 21 and older can add a Bear-Varian Beer Tasting Card for six 8-oz. pours at stations spread across the mountain. Ten breweries and cideries are pouring this season, including Blackhorse, Highland, Xul, Hi-Wire, Peaceful Side and Gypsy Circus Cider. Tasting locations serve 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, which is later than the park opens on early days. Unused pours carry over to another visit through November 1 as long as you keep the pass.

    Admission

    Advance tickets start at:

    • Adult (12 to 64): $39.99
    • Child (4 to 11): $27.99
    • Senior (65+): $32.99
    • Ages 3 and under: Free

General admission covers all-day Crystal Express gondola and Ridge Rambler access plus the mountaintop attractions: Treetop Skywalk, AnaVista Tower, Vista Gardens, the TreeVenture challenge course, BirdVenture and the treehouse play area. The festival itself costs nothing extra. Prices come from the official ticket store and can vary by date.

You may purchase tickets at GetYourGuide, the ticketing partner for My Smoky Mountain Guide. Most tickets are discounted.

    Optional Add-Ons

    Purchase these directly from Anakeesta:

    • Bear-Varian Beer Tasting Card, $22.99: six 8-oz. pours and a souvenir lanyard, 21+ with valid ID, redeemable August 28 through November 1 with a valid admission ticket
    • Astra Lumina night walk, $18.99
    • Mountain coaster pass, $16.99: two rides on the Hellbender or Rail Runner

    Hours, Parking and Getting There

Hours shift throughout the season, generally opening at 9:00 or 10:00 AM and closing at 8:00 or 9:00 PM, with the longer days falling on weekends and through peak leaf season. Posted closing is when the last ticket sells, and the last ride down runs an hour after that, so an 8:00 PM close is not an 8:00 PM eviction.

Anakeesta sits at traffic light #5 on the Parkway. A paid lot next to the entrance is run by Parkway Parking rather than by Anakeesta, and the city garages are a short walk away. Downtown parking fills fast on fall weekends.

Dollywood turns over to fall on September 14 and stays that way through Halloween. Harvest Festival presented by Humana is the park’s longest festival of the year, and it runs on two clocks. Daytime is live Southern music and seasonal food. After dark the whole place lights up for Great Pumpkin LumiNights. Both are included with regular park admission, which is the question most visitors ask first.

    Great Pumpkin LumiNights

LumiNights is why a lot of people come. Thousands of hand-carved pumpkins line the walkways, a 40-foot pumpkin tree anchors the display, and Dolly’s giant illuminated guitar glows over one corner of the park. Hoot Owl Hollow returns with its enormous lit owl and dozens of smaller ones roosting in the trees and across the hillside. It is built to be pretty rather than frightening, so it suits small kids and anyone who would rather skip a haunted house. USA Today 10Best readers voted the festival America’s Best Fall Event.

Music, Food, and What’s New This Year

Dozens of country, bluegrass and Southern gospel acts perform daily on stages and street corners across the park. Showtimes shift day to day, and the Dollywood app carries the current schedule.

Two things are new for 2026:

    • Candy Corn Country. The Country Fair area gets a candy-corn takeover, with characters to meet and seasonal surprises.
    • Harvey’s Boo Bash. A separately ticketed after-hours event on three October nights only.

A Harvest Festival Tasting Pass covers up to five festival foods for one price, which beats buying them one at a time. Park admission is not included with the pass.

    Tickets and Add-ons

    • Harvest Festival and Great Pumpkin LumiNights: included with park admission or a Season Pass
    • Harvey’s Boo Bash, ages 4 and up: $129.99 plus tax, $5 off for Gold and Diamond passholders
    • Boo Bash dates: October 16, 23 and 30, park entry from 4 p.m. with the exclusive event 9 p.m. to midnight
    • Parking: $25 per day

Day ticket prices move by date, so pull yours for the day you want at dollywood.com/tickets. Prices here come from Dollywood’s official pages and can change.

    Planning Notes

Park hours shift across the seven weeks. Most days run 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and early October stretches to 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. Confirm your date on the park calendar before you drive up.

October Saturdays are the busiest stretch, and they land on peak leaf color, which is also when Sevier County lodging fills. Tuesday through Thursday is noticeably calmer. If LumiNights is the main draw, arrive in the afternoon instead of at opening. The glow starts at sundown and you will want energy left for it.

Ober Gatlinburg bills this one as Gatlinburg’s Original Oktoberfest, and for five weeks the mountaintop park plays the part. Blue-and-white checks and oversized steins go up, the biergarten fills as the music gets going, and the tram ride up while the ridges turn color makes a good fall afternoon on its own.

    Beer, Sausages and Strudel

The biergarten pours five German-style beers from Yee-Haw Brewing, a Tennessee brewery. The food sticks close to Bavaria, with a couple of Smoky Mountain additions:

    • Chicken schnitzel and sausages
    • Giant pretzels and turkey legs
    • Apple strudel and pumpkin fudge

    Who Is Playing and When

The entertainment changes through the run, so check the lineup against your date:

    • The Polka Dots: Sept. 25 to 27, Oct. 4, Oct. 9 to 11 and Oct. 23 to 25, sets at 1 pm, 3 pm and 5 pm
    • Polkawagen: Oct. 16 to 18 and Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, 1 pm to 4 pm
    • The Hodnett Family Band: Oct. 2 and 3, 1 pm to 4 pm
    • Kevin McGuire: Oct. 6 and Oct. 20
    • Uresti Entertainment: most other weekdays, at 1 pm, 2:30 pm and 4 pm

Polkawagen is the pick for the full oompah treatment: a husband-and-wife duo that sounds like a whole band, with polkas, waltzes, sing-alongs and Oktoberfest trivia. The Hodnetts bring bluegrass and gospel instead. Nothing had been announced for Oct. 14, 22 or 28 at the time of writing.

    Stein Holding and Barrel Rolls

Every open day has stein-holding and barrel-roll contests, usually at 2 pm. Polka Dots days add a 4 pm round, and Polkawagen and Hodnett days move them to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm.

    Tickets and Passes

Ober does not list a separate Oktoberfest admission, so what you pay depends on how you get up the mountain. Prices are from Ober’s ticket page in September 2026 and can change:

    • Gatlinburg Tram only: $29 round trip, ages 5 and up
    • Fun Pass: $39 a day ahead, $49 same day online, $54 on site. Includes the tram, Sky Village Lift, ice skating and more
    • Adventure Pass: $59 ahead, $69 same day online, $74 on site. Adds the bobsled and a Tennessee Flyer coaster ride
    • Ages 4 and under: free with a paying adult on most activities

Ober’s FAQ page covers senior discounts for ages 60 and up. Mountain biking, disc golf and archery run Friday through Sunday only and close for the season after Oct. 18.

    Getting Up the Mountain

The tram is the easy way. Park in Ober’s downtown lot at 314 Cottage Drive for $10 and board at the Tramway Mall, 1001 Parkway, between traffic lights 8 and 10. Driving means three winding miles up Ski Mountain Road from light 10, with limited $10 parking at the top and no room for buses or oversized vehicles on weekends. Call ahead if you plan to drive.

The festival is closed Sept. 29 and 30, and park hours shift by date, so check Ober’s hours calendar before you go.

Darnell Farms sits in a bend of the Tuckasegee River a few minutes outside Bryson City, and from the middle of September through the first day of November the back half of the place gives itself over to fall. Wagons run out to the pumpkin field, the corn maze opens, and the farm stand fills up with apples, mums and winter squash. This is a working second-generation farm rather than a built-for-October attraction, and that is most of the appeal.

Hayrides and the maze run Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., from September 12 through November 1. The farm itself is open seven days a week until 7 p.m., so a Monday stop still gets you produce and a DreamWhip, just no wagon.

The Hayride and the Pumpkin Patch

The wagon takes a one-mile loop through the fields and drops you off in the patch, where you pick whatever pumpkin you want, any size, included in your admission. Not a pre-cut one off a pallet by the door, an actual pumpkin still attached to an actual vine. Bring a tote or a couple of reusable grocery bags. Carrying a fifteen-pound pumpkin back across a field is a great deal easier with handles, and nobody thinks of it until they are already standing out there holding one.

Getting Lost in the Corn Maze

The maze is cut into standing field corn, so it walks and smells like the real thing. Expect uneven ground, closed-toe shoes, and clothes you do not mind getting dusty. Kids will happily burn an hour in there. Late afternoon is the prettiest time to go, when the light drops behind the ridge and the rows turn gold, though that also means finishing up as the light fades, which is worth thinking about with small children along.

    What it Costs

One ticket covers the lot: the hayride, the corn maze and the pumpkin you pick out of the patch. Food and anything from the farm stand are extra. Pricing splits between weekdays and weekends, so a Wednesday or Thursday visit saves a family of four a real amount of money.

    • Wednesday to Friday: $24.95 ages 9 and up, $14.95 ages 3 to 8
    • Saturday and Sunday: $29.95 ages 9 and up, $17.95 ages 3 to 8
    • Ages 2 and under: free

Prices confirmed with the farm for the 2026 season and can change, so check before you go.

    The Rest of the Farm

The riverbank side has playgrounds, adult-sized swing sets and picnic tables, and the main stage outside the farm stand hosts live music and food trucks through the season. The stand carries the farm’s own produce plus local jams, honey, breads and jerky, and the DreamWhip counter, a soft-serve blended with seasonal fruit, is the thing regulars come back for. Plan on staying longer than you meant to.

    Before You Go

October weekends are far and away the busiest stretch of the season, so go early in the day or come midweek if crowds matter to you. If the forecast looks wet, call the farm at (828) 488-2376 first, since wagons and mud do not mix and the farm posts changes to its Facebook page faster than anywhere else.

School and group field trips run separately, Wednesday through Friday from September 16 to November 6 at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon, with no trips on October 23. Those include the hayride, a talk about how the farm works, a pumpkin to take home and a field-trip-sized DreamWhip, booked through darnellfarms.com/field-trips.

The Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair returns to the Gatlinburg Convention Center from October 8 through October 28, 2026, its longest run of the year and its 51st year overall. More than 200 craftspeople fill 150,000 square feet of floor, and every one of them clears a jury process before getting a booth. That is the difference between this and a general craft show. You won’t pass the same imported trinkets four times.

Doors are open 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day of the run. Plan on most of a day if you want to see the whole floor without rushing it.

Admission and the Free Multi-Day Pass

    • Adults: $12
    • Children 17 and under: free with a paid adult
    • Multi-day pass: free, photo ID required

Tickets are sold at the door, at either convention center entrance. Before you leave, stop at the office on Aisle 500 with your ID and staff will convert your ticket into an unlimited pass good for the rest of the run at no charge. Across a three-week fair that is the single most useful thing to know. Come back on a quieter weekday and finish what you didn’t get to.

What You’ll Find on the Floor

Pottery, hand-knotted rugs, tooled leather, copper art, jewelry, woodwork, baskets, original paintings, photography, pyrography and candy from local makers. The October fair leans into holiday shopping harder than the summer one: wreaths, ceramic trees, festive reindeer, Christmas ornaments, nativity pieces, painted wall hangings.

A lot of the artisans work at their booths through the day, so you can watch a piece take shape and ask the person making it how it’s done. Concessions are available inside.

    Music Shows Included with Admission

Two shows daily, at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, on the stage inside. Contemporary country, bluegrass and gospel, no extra ticket. The 2026 October lineup:

    • October 8 to 14: The Dennis Lee Band
    • October 15 to 16: Misty River
    • October 17 to 20: Mountain Highway
    • October 21 to 22: Misty River
    • October 23 to 24: Mountain Highway
    • October 25 to 28: The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys

    Parking, Trolleys and October Traffic

The fair sits in the middle of leaf season, the busiest three weeks Gatlinburg gets. Paid lots are close by on Historic Nature Trail, but they fill early on October weekends. The easier play is to park free at one of the Park and Ride lots, either the Highway 441 Welcome Center (145 spaces) or the Highway 321 lot at the City Hall complex (95 spaces), then ride in. The blue and purple trolley routes both stop right outside the convention center and run 8:30 AM to midnight through October 31, roughly every 45 minutes.

This one is not a weekend pop-up. Rotary raises a long tent at Patriot Park in late September and leaves it standing for a month, which makes it one of the few craft events in the Smokies you can drop into on a Tuesday afternoon without building a trip around it.

    What Fills the Booths

The mix is handmade rather than imported: pottery, turned and carved wood, quilts, crocheted work, jewelry, candles, soaps and a lot of fall decor.

The vendor list also shifts through the run. Some crafters book the full month, others take a single week, so the tent in mid-October is not the same tent you walked through on opening weekend. If something catches your eye, buy it while you are standing in front of it.

Do not arrive expecting a festival. There is no music stage, no midway, no rides. It is a shopping tent in a riverside park, and that is exactly why people keep coming back to it.

    Admission and the Donation Box

There is no ticket. A donation box sits at the entrance and you give what you think the visit was worth. That money is the whole point of the event: the fall fair and its spring counterpart are the club’s two main fundraisers, and the proceeds go to scholarships and community projects in Sevier County. Free admission here is not a loss leader for anything.

Parking, the Trolley and the Traffic

Patriot Park sits at traffic light 7 in the Old Mill district, off Old Mill Avenue. Parking at the park is free, but the same lot serves as the city’s trolley station and it fills on October weekends. If you find it full, the municipal lots on Teaster Lane are also free and a trolley will bring you back in. Every Pigeon Forge trolley route starts and ends at this stop, which makes the fair one of the easiest things in town to reach without moving your car twice.

    When to Go

Weekday mornings are the calm version. Crafters have time to talk, and if you want to know how a piece was made, that is when to ask. Weekend afternoons in October are the opposite, with peak leaf season and peak Parkway traffic working against you.

The tent keeps rain off, but it is open at the sides, so you feel the weather. Late October mornings in the valley start cold even when the afternoon turns warm. Take a jacket you can tie around your waist by noon.

    Next Door to the Fair

Old Mill Square is a two-minute walk: the working mill, the pottery, the candy kitchen and the restaurants around them. The paved loop around Patriot Park follows the Little Pigeon River and connects to the Riverwalk Greenway if you want to stretch the visit into an afternoon.

And if you miss the fall dates entirely, the club runs a second fair at the same park in the spring.

The Wears Valley Fall Fest takes over sixteen acres of open field on Wears Valley Road for three days every October, and it has grown into one of the larger craft gatherings on this side of the Smokies. The 2026 run is the thirteenth, Friday October 16 through Sunday October 18. Organizers advertise more than 240 crafters and vendors alongside food trucks, a live music stage and children’s activities. Admission goes to Keep Sevier Beautiful, the county nonprofit that puts the festival on.

What the Vendor Rows Look Like

This is not a juried show, and that is part of the appeal. Established woodturners and potters set up next to makers in their first season, so the walk down the rows stays unpredictable. The published 2026 lineup covers jewelry, handwoven baskets, quilts and textiles, chainsaw carvings, metalwork, photography, pottery, soaps, fruit butters, country bakery goods and a good deal of holiday decor. Plenty of regulars treat it as a Christmas shopping trip.

    Music all Three Days

The stage runs from mid-morning through late afternoon Friday and Saturday, in sets of about forty-five minutes, and leans toward country, bluegrass and Appalachian folk from regional performers. Sunday closes with Jimbo Whaley playing a longer set from 1:00 to 3:00. The full schedule is posted on the festival site, and organizers note it is subject to change.

    Food

Southern festival food, handled by a mix of trucks and booths spread through the grounds. Barbecue, kettle corn, loaded potatoes and bakery items are the usual shape of it. Come hungry rather than picky.

    Getting There and Parking

The grounds sit beside Tennessee State Bank on Wears Valley Road, roughly eight miles from traffic light #3 in Pigeon Forge heading toward Townsend on US 321. Parking is free and on site. Wears Valley Road is two lanes with very little shoulder, and traffic stacks up on Saturday morning, so either get there near opening or wait until early afternoon.

The Cherokee Rodders have run the Cruise the Smokies Rod Run twice a year for decades, and the fall show is the bigger of the two. Expect hundreds of pre-1986 cars and trucks, a good share of them driven in from several states away, along with parts vendors, food vendors, live music and a 450 horsepower crate motor sitting in the middle of it waiting for somebody’s raffle ticket.

A New Home for the Fall Show

For 2026 the Rod Run moves off the Harrah’s Cherokee campus and onto the Cherokee Expo Center grounds at 1501 Acquoni Road, the site locals still call the old high school and the same place that hosts the Cherokee Indian Fair. The club is calling it scaling up. For anyone who came in past years, the practical difference is room: show parking spreads across an asphalt lot and out onto the old football field, with separate space for trailers and  spectator vehicles.

Getting In and What It Costs

Spectator entry is free both days, with no ticket to buy in advance. That makes it an easy stop to build a Saturday morning around, even with people in the car who might only last an hour.

If you are bringing a car to show:

    • $35 pre-registration online, open until roughly two weeks before the show
    • $40 at the gate once pre-registration closes
    • One fee covers the whole event, there are no single-day entries
    • Vehicles must be 1985 or older unless the club approves them ahead of time

Registered entrants collect a goodie bag at the red registration trailer with poker cards, a Friday meal ticket and the agenda inside.

    What Happens Each Day

Thursday is the warm-up. Onsite registration opens at noon next to an Early Bird Show, where cars already parked get voted on and go into their own cash and door prize drawings, and an evening cruise leaves the grounds at 5:00 pm.

Friday and Saturday are the main event, gates at 8:30 am. Friday brings the poker cruise, a scenic drive around the Cherokee area with five stops where drivers draw a card. Best hand and worst hand both take cash. Friday evening there is a thank you dinner for registered participants, catered by K&B of Bryson City.

Saturday trades the drive for a poker walk around the grounds and adds the two things worth timing your visit around: valve cover racing, which is exactly as ridiculous and fun to watch as it sounds, and the model car contest, judged in kids, youth and adult divisions. Trophy winners and the last cash giveaways come at 4:00 pm.

    Raffles, Merch and Prizes

Tickets for the crate motor and tool box raffles are sold at the event merchandise trailer, along with 50/50 tickets and the event shirts. The shirts are not sold online or in advance and they do sell out. You have to be present to collect cash prizes. Raffle winners do not, but the ticket needs contact information on it and prizes have to be picked up within a week.

    Before You Go

Everything here is outdoors and the show runs rain or shine, so dress for a mountain October rather than for the forecast at home. The site is accessible throughout with accessible parking next to the show grounds, though the club does not rent mobility scooters. If you buy something large from a vendor and need to load it, check in at the front gate first.

A Field Full of Handmade Work

The October show is the last of Maggie Valley’s three arts and crafts weekends each year, and the organizers say it is the one fall visitors like best. More than 100 artisans from across the Southeast set up on the Festival Grounds, and the town expects upward of 10,000 shoppers over the two days. It is the largest gathering of its kind in the valley.

Prices vary widely. One booth might have a turned wooden bowl or a framed landscape priced like a gallery piece, and the next one over sells goat milk soap. Past shows have featured:

    • Pottery and wooden bowls
    • Paintings and photography
    • Jewelry
    • Handmade furniture and yard art
    • Goat milk soaps
    • Seasonal decor, which leans toward fall and the holidays at this show

You don’t need a shopping list to enjoy it. Plenty of people come just to wander the rows, though few seem to leave empty-handed.

    Festival Food

Food vendors work the grounds both days. At the July 2026 show that meant barbecue, sandwiches, glazed nuts, funnel cakes, kettle corn, ice cream and fresh-squeezed lemonade. The October lineup hasn’t been announced, but several of the same vendors have appeared at past shows. The grounds also have permanent restrooms and a concession building.

Pair It With a Fall Drive

Mid-October is a popular time to be in the mountains, so it is easy to build a day around this. Soco Road climbs east out of town to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Soco Gap. If you’re planning a longer stay, the same field hosts the Smoky Mountains Bluegrass Festival the following Saturday, October 24. Parkway sections can close for maintenance or weather, so check the National Park Service road status page before you go.

    Admission, Parking and Donations

There is no charge to get in and no charge to park. At recent shows the chamber has taken optional donations at the gate for Friends of the Haywood County Animal Shelter, so a few dollars in your pocket won’t go to waste. Some cash is also useful in case a booth doesn’t take cards.

The Festival Grounds sit right on Soco Road in the middle of town and are hard to miss. The town runs a live webcam of the grounds, linked from the Festival Grounds website, so you can check the crowd and the sky before you head over.

    NOC’s End-of-Season Send-Off

The Guest Appreciation Festival, which regulars shorten to GAF, is how Nantahala Outdoor Center closes out its paddling season. The riverside campus fills with boaters, hikers and families who come as much for the bargains as for the music. You don’t have to paddle to enjoy it, but if you do, this is the weekend to be in the Gorge.

    The Used Gear Market

This is why a lot of people make the drive. More than 20 vendors set up with secondhand boats, PFDs, hiking boots, mountain bike gear and plenty in between. If you’re hunting for a specific boat, show up at opening.

    • Friday: 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM
    • Saturday: 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
    • Sunday: opens 8:00 AM, closing time not posted

An Artisan Market with handcrafted work from regional makers keeps the same hours, so the rest of your group has something to browse while you dig through paddles.

    Buying a Retired NOC Raft

NOC sells a limited number of 8-person and 5-person rafts retired from its commercial fleet, lined up in front of the Adventure Center. Condition varies from boat to boat, every raft is sold as-is, and all sales are final. Look each one over carefully, and work out how you’ll get it home before you hand over any money.

    • Friday and Saturday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Sunday: opens 9:00 AM, closing time not posted

    Store Markdowns and Free Music

The Outfitter’s Store is open all weekend with end-of-season pricing. There’s also a big pop-up sale tent in the main parking lot, across from the Adventure Deck on the other side of the river from the store. That’s where the flash deals on gear and clothing from major outdoor brands turn up.

Live music is free. It runs Friday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. NOC doesn’t list any music for Sunday.

    Extras for Kids

NOC’s festival page currently gives the weekend a Halloween twist. It lists a costume contest and face painting in the backyard of Big Wesser, plus candy hidden around the campus stores. Check the official page closer to the date to make sure those extras are on for 2026.

    Getting There and Staying Over

NOC’s main campus sits on US 19 in the Nantahala Gorge, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the river, west of downtown Bryson City. Late October is a busy leaf-season stretch across the Smokies, so lock in lodging early. NOC rents bungalows, cabins and lodge rooms right on campus if you’d rather not drive at the end of the day. Schedules can shift, so check the official GAF page before you head out.

Plow Days is the biggest weekend Darnell Farms puts on all year, and the one thing on the fall calendar around Bryson City you cannot see anywhere else. On Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, the farm demonstrates how ground was broken and turned before tractors existed, working a field the old way in front of anyone who wants to stand and watch. Admission is free.

Watching the Old Way of Doing It

Most fall festivals hand you a hayride and a cider. This one shows you the actual work. Turning a field without an engine is slow, physical and a good deal more precise than it looks, and watching it done properly gives you a different sense of what the valley floor around here took to farm in the first place. It lands well with kids who like machinery and even better with anyone whose grandparents talked about doing it themselves.

    Food, Music and Vendors

Food trucks set up for both days, live music runs from the main stage by the farm stand, and local vendors fill the grounds with crafts and seasonal goods. Late October is usually peak color on the ridges above the river, so the setting does a fair amount of the work. The farm stand stays open alongside everything else with produce, apples, jams, honey and the DreamWhip counter, a soft-serve blended with seasonal fruit that regulars come back for on its own.

    The Corn Maze and Hayrides

October 24 and 25 fall inside the regular fall season, so the corn maze and the one-mile hayride out to the pumpkin patch are both running. One weekend ticket covers the maze, the ride and the pumpkin you pick out of the patch: $29.95 for ages 9 and up, $17.95 for ages 3 to 8, free for ages 2 and under. Food is separate. This is the busiest weekend the farm sees all year, so come early rather than late if picking a pumpkin is the reason you are making the drive.

    Practical Notes

Everything happens outdoors on farm ground. Wear shoes you can walk a field in, and bring layers, because the valley cools off quickly once the sun drops behind the ridge. Saturday midday is the peak of it, and Sunday afternoon is noticeably calmer if you want room to move. Check the farm’s Facebook page the morning of if rain is in the forecast.

Bryson City is ten minutes down the road, so a Plow Days morning pairs easily with lunch downtown or an afternoon on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.

A Day of Bluegrass When the Leaves Turn

This festival is the Haywood County Arts Council’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and you can tell. The music is the main draw, but the council also brings its member artists, who work at their tables through the afternoon. There are also vendors with handmade work, raffles, a playground for kids and grown-ups, and local food and drink. The late October date usually puts color on the ridges above the valley. More than 1,000 people came last year.

    Who’s Playing in 2026

Four bands are on the bill, and three of them have played this festival before:

Neither set times nor the running order have been published. If you’re coming for one band, check with the arts council closer to the date.
Set times haven’t been announced. If you’re coming for one band, check with the arts council closer to the date.

    Tickets and Prices

Tickets are sold through the Haywood County Arts Council. The early bird rate ended August 30, so these are the current prices:

    • General admission (over 12): $65 plus 7% NC sales tax, $69.55 total
    • Kids 12 and under: free
    • Folding chair rental: $5 at the gate

All sales are final. Prices come from the arts council’s festival page as of September 2026 and may change, so check before you buy.

    What to Bring

Bring your own seating. A camp chair or blanket works, or you can rent a chair at the gate. Coolers aren’t allowed, so plan to buy food and drinks on site. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

The festival goes on whatever the weather does, and there are no refunds for rain. Late October mornings in the valley can be chilly, and it cools off quickly once the sun drops behind the mountains. Pack a layer even if the forecast looks good.

    Getting There and Parking

The festival grounds are on Soco Road, the main road through Maggie Valley, so they’re easy to find. The venue says there’s plenty of parking on site. The arts council doesn’t say whether parking is free for this event, so ask when you buy your tickets.

Stampede swaps its usual North-versus-South arena rivalry for a holiday version from late October through the New Year, and the changeover goes a lot further than garland on the railings. Snow falls inside the 35,000 square foot arena, the floor gets turned over to skaters partway through, and the cast of 32 horses works a program built around Christmas instead of the standard show. If you have seen the regular Stampede, the bones will feel familiar. Most of what sits on top of them is new.

    What the Holiday Version Changes

The friendly competition becomes North Pole against South Pole, and you pick a side when you sit down. A live nativity brings three kings in on real camels. Santa arrives by horse-drawn sleigh, the Sugar Plum Fairy sets a pile of oversized toys moving, and the arena is flooded for an ice skating sequence the show has run under the name Elegance on Ice. Pyrotechnics, heavy lighting changes and a loud sound system run throughout.

    The Four-Course Feast

Everyone in the building eats the same meal, and there is no separate children’s menu:

    • Original creamy vegetable soup
    • Hot homemade biscuit
    • Whole rotisserie chicken
    • Hickory-smoked pulled pork
    • Corn on the cob and homestyle mashed potatoes
    • Dessert, with unlimited Coca-Cola products, tea or coffee

Vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available, but you have to request them when you reserve, not when you sit down.

Seating Tiers and What They Get You

There are four. Value seats sit at an angle near the ends of the arena, close to where the cast enters and exits. Regular seats are in the same sections but more central. Premium moves you into prime seating. VIP puts you in the front row and adds a cast meet-and-greet, a digital souvenir photo, a cheering flag and a lanyard. Pricing moves with the date and the showtime, so check the booking page for the night you actually want. Military rates are offered but cannot be booked online, so call the box office for those. Groups of 20 or more get separate pricing.

    Getting There and Arriving Early

The arena is at 3849 Parkway. Coming north from Gatlinburg it is on your right just before traffic light 8. Coming south from Sevierville, turn at light 8 onto Dollywood Lane, then right onto S. River Road. You can arrive up to an hour and fifteen minutes before showtime, and it is worth doing. The open-air stables along the Horse Walk let you meet the horses before they work, and there is pre-show entertainment in the saloon while you wait. Showing up five minutes before the doors close means paying for a chunk of the evening you never see.

    Worth Knowing Before You Book

    • Children under 3 are free only if they sit on a lap and eat from a parent’s plate
    • There is no bag restriction, but every guest passes through a scanner at the door
    • Live animals, pyro and abrupt lighting changes make this a demanding room for anyone sensitive to noise or flashing light
    • December weekends fill early, so reserve before you drive over rather than after

    Get Your Guide Tickets

The advantage of purchasing tickets via Get Your Guide is that you can book now, pay later. Cancel up until a couple of days before the event. The downside is you may pay a little more for the tickets for this particular venue. Compare before you buy.

What the Park Looks Like After Dark

Dollywood strings up more than six million lights for Christmas, and each section of the park gets its own color scheme. Santa’s Village keeps to traditional red and green, Glacier Ridge goes cold blue and white, and Craftsman’s Valley glows a soft candlelight gold.

Country Fair becomes Peppermint Valley for the season, wrapped in red and white candy-cane lights. It is also where most of the smaller kids’ rides are, so families with young children tend to end up there anyway.

The festival began in 1990, and 2026 marks its 36th season.

Snow in the Grove and Weekend Fireworks

Wildwood Grove puts on Snow in the Grove each night, when the Wildwood Tree and the glowing Roly Poly characters come alive with light, music and falling snow. Showtimes are in the Dollywood app.

The fireworks show, Merry & Bright, Holiday Light!, is set to Christmas songs and runs on weekends only. Check which nights before you pick a date.

    The Christmas Shows

Christmas in the Smokies has been the headline show since 1990. ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas is the other indoor favorite. Outdoors, Appalachian Christmas and O Holy Night play against the lights and the cold mountain air. On a chilly night the indoor theaters are the warmest seats in the park, so expect them to fill.

    Food and the Tasting Pass

The festival menu leans hearty and sweet. The Christmas Tasting Pass covers up to five festival foods for one price, a good way to sample without committing to a full meal. Details for the 2026 pass have not been released yet.

    Tickets and What They Cost

There is no separate ticket for the lights. The lights, shows and fireworks are all included with regular park admission.

    • Pick-A-Day 1-Day: from $94.99 adults, must visit on the date chosen, price varies by date
    • Good-Any-Day 1-Day: from $99.99 adults
    • 2-Day tickets: from $124.99 adults (Pick-A-Day) or $129.99 (Good-Any-Day)
    • Children and seniors: discounted, prices shown at checkout

Prices are from the official Dollywood ticket store, do not include tax, and can change by date.

The Smoky Mountain Christmas Guided Tour is a paid add-on with reserved seating on the Dollywood Express, a collectible lanyard, character visits and a holiday treat with a hot drink. The 2026 tour dates are not on sale yet.

    Hours, Parking and Getting There

Hours shift through the season, and the lights are best after dark, which comes before 6:00 PM in December. Arrive in the afternoon and stay into the evening. The park has traditionally closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and the week after Christmas is one of the busiest of the year.

General parking is $25 per vehicle, with trams running from the outer lots to the front gate. Preferred parking, closer in with its own ticket window, is $55.

Winterfest is the big seasonal light display in Pigeon Forge, and the Driving Tour of Lights is the easiest way to take it in. There are no tickets, reservations or set start times. Wait for dark, head down the Parkway and go as slowly as the back seat demands.

What You Will See Along the Route

The city counts more than 6 million lights across Winterfest, and the driving route takes in the Parkway, Island Drive and a few side roads. Past tours have passed glowing bears, deer and foxes, giant ornaments, tall lit trees and fairy-tale scenes featuring Mother Goose and Humpty Dumpty. The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel is lit in holiday colors, too. Displays change from year to year, so treat this as a sample rather than a checklist.

Stretching Your Legs on the Walking Trail

If you would rather get out of the car, the Wonders of Light Walking Trail follows the Riverwalk with more than 45 nature-themed displays. It is free, paved and mostly flat, and leashed pets and wheelchairs are welcome. Last season the trail was open 5:00 PM – 1:00 AM daily, with free parking at the municipal lot at 2936 Teaster Lane.

    Guided Options

The city no longer runs its own trolley tour of the lights. For a guided evening instead, GetYourGuide has listed Pigeon Forge light tours, including small-group options. Availability and prices shift by date, so check the current listing before you plan around one. Browse Pigeon Forge light tours on GetYourGuide

    Dates Worth Knowing

    • Season Dates: Lights are scheduled for Nov 6, 2026 through Jan 31, 2027. Last season ran until Feb 15, so this year’s finish comes earlier.
    • Winterfest Kickoff: Nov 13, 2026, 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Patriot Park.
    • Christmas Village: Nov 13-15 and Nov 20-28, with handcrafted gifts and treats from local makers near the walking trail.
    • Winterfest at The Island: Nov 21, 2026 through Jan 31, 2027, with a 40-foot walk-through Christmas tree and a choreographed fountain show.

    Maps and Timing

The city posts a free driving tour map on its Winterfest pages, but the version linked right now is last season’s, so look for a 2026 update. Printed maps have also been handed out at Pigeon Forge Welcome Centers. Parkway traffic can crawl on busy evenings, so leave yourself extra time.

What the Ride Is Actually Like

The train leaves the Bryson City depot for about an hour and fifteen minutes, and on the evening runs there is nothing out the window but dark woods. That is not the point. Chefs and elves work the aisle with hot chocolate and a cookie, the movie soundtrack plays, and the Chris Van Allsburg story is read aloud while the car sings along. The North Pole appears out of the black as a lit Christmas village, Santa boards for the return leg, and every child gets a silver sleigh bell. Pajamas are encouraged, but closed-toe shoes are required.

    Choosing a Class of Service

Coach has windows that open, ceiling fans and heat, and sells by the individual seat, so your section may be shared with another party. Crown Class is climate controlled with plush seats and picture windows, sold in sections of two or four that you buy in full. Premium Crown puts you in the restored wooden-interior cars that look most like the film. First Class adds a ceramic souvenir mug, an extra treat and a tote per reservation.

    What Tickets Cost

    • Coach adult, age 13 and up: from $50.85 per seat
    • Coach child, ages 2 to 12: from $33.52 per seat
    • Coach infant, under 24 months: free, but must have their own seat
    • Crown Class: from $57.50 per seat, in sections of two or four
    • Premium Crown: from $66.16 per seat, four-top tables from $264.64
    • First Class: from $71.94 per seat, two-tops from $143.88

Those are starting prices from the railroad’s own page and include the ticket fee and historic preservation fee. Steam dates, peak dates and Christmas Eve run higher, so check the figure for your date. In the table classes, one lap child under 24 months rides free per adult ticket.

Departure Times and Dates It Skips

Most nights run at 5:00 PM, 6:40 PM and 8:20 PM, though a few early-November weeknights drop the 8:20 PM. Saturdays from November 21 add 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM matinees, December Sundays add a 1:00 PM, and December 21 through 23 add a 3:00 PM. November 5 and December 31 keep their own times of 5:30 PM and 7:05 PM. No trains run November 10, November 17, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day.

    Parking and Arrival

Be at the depot an hour before departure to collect tickets. Parking is across the street at 45 Mitchell Street and the fee is already charged to your reservation; RVs pay $16 in cash. Downtown street parking is capped at two hours, which will not cover the visit. Your ticket also covers the Smoky Mountain Trains Museum, worth the walk beforehand.

    Fine Print Worth Knowing

Seats are assigned and you choose them at checkout, and a party has to book adjacent seats. The train runs in winter weather. Reservations are refundable less a fee until 60 days out and nonrefundable after that, though you can reschedule within the same calendar year for a small fee. No alcohol is allowed on board or on the grounds. December weekends sell out first, and several already show sold out for 2026.

The Night Downtown Belongs to Pedestrians

The Parkway closes to cars and the whole stretch between Mountain Mall and Gatlinburg SkyPark turns into a walking festival. Vendor tents line both sides, a main stage carries live music, and a DJ keeps things moving between acts. The moment everyone waits for comes at 6:00 PM, when the Winter Magic countdown ends and more than a million LED lights come on across downtown at once. That switch-on is the official start of Gatlinburg’s share of Smoky Mountain Winterfest, and the displays stay lit into February.

    The Chili

Restaurants, attractions, civic groups and city departments set up along the route with their own recipes, from straight-ahead beef and bean to whatever a distillery talks itself into. Past entrants have included Ole Smoky, Anakeesta, Ripley’s Aquarium, and the Gatlinburg fire and police departments. Visitors taste and then vote in the People’s Choice awards, which in the current format cover both Best Chili and Best Dessert.

    What Else Is Set Up

    • Ice skating rink
    • Christmas tree farm and photos with Santa
    • Giant inflatable snow globe and the Snomazing inflatable maze
    • Carnival games and holiday photo ops
    • Carolers working the crowd along the Parkway
    • Arts and crafts vendors, plus event sweatshirts and shirts

    Getting In and Parking

Road closures start hours ahead. In recent years the southbound Parkway lanes closed around 9:00 AM and the northbound lanes around 10:00 AM, with traffic pushed onto River Road, Airport Road or Cherokee Orchard Road. The Parkway reopens around midnight. Park in a downtown garage or a city lot well before 4:00 PM and plan to walk in. If you are staying downtown, leave the car entirely. Bring a jacket, since standing still on a November evening in the mountains gets cold faster than people expect.

Anakeesta is calling this year’s Enchanted Christmas a reimagined version of its holiday season, with thousands of twinkling lights, live entertainment and seasonal touches spread across the mountaintop villages. It is also the first Christmas since the park finished the opening phase of its expansion. You now ride up in the Crystal Express, a gondola with glass-bottom cabins, and after dark the Firefly Experience glows along the pathways at no extra charge.

Anakeesta had not released the full 2026 schedule of shows and holiday food when this listing was written. The Anakeesta Carolers are confirmed for Breakfast with Santa, so check the official site closer to opening day for the rest of the lineup.

    Time Your Visit for Sunset

The lights are the reason to come, so arrive in the afternoon and stay into the evening. Admission covers the whole day. Walk the Treetop Skywalk and climb AnaVista Tower while it is still light, then watch the villages switch on. Bring a real coat. The park is almost entirely outdoors, and it is noticeably colder on top than down on the Parkway.

    Admission

Enchanted Christmas is included with general admission. These are advance online prices from the official ticket store, and they can vary by date:

    • Adults (12 to 64): $39.99
    • Children (4 to 11): $27.99
    • Seniors (65 and over): $34.99
    • Ages 3 and under: Free
    • Astra Lumina night walk: $18.99 add-on

If you are likely to come back, an adult VIP Annual Pass is $79.99, about the price of two single visits, and it takes 20% off most food and retail.

    Breakfast with Santa

On Dec 5, 12, 19 and 20, 2026, families can reach the mountain before it opens for breakfast at Clifftop, a carol sing-along, holiday crafts, a professional photo with Santa and a small souvenir for each child. Check-in at the gondola or Ridge Rambler is no later than 7:45 AM. Tickets are sold online only, include general admission and tend to sell out:

    • Adults: $104.99
    • Children (4 to 11): $87.99
    • Seniors (65 and over): $97.99
    • Ages 3 and under: Free, reservation required

    Holiday Hours and Getting There

Hours change through the season, and the busiest weeks run the longest days. The park is closed on Christmas Day, closes at 6:00 PM on Christmas Eve and stays open past midnight on New Year’s Eve. Anakeesta notes that the posted closing time is the last ticket sale, and the last ride down leaves about an hour later.

You redeem tickets at the base ticket booth at 576 Parkway, at traffic light #5 in downtown Gatlinburg. You cannot drive to the top, so plan to park in a downtown lot or garage and walk over.

    The Afternoon Build

This is the evening Pigeon Forge flips the switch on Winterfest, and the city treats it as a proper community party rather than a photo op. Patriot Park fills up early with food trucks, holiday vendors and free family entertainment on stage. In past years the program has opened with a tribute to veterans, fitting for a park built around memorials to each branch of the armed forces, followed by local choirs and regional musicians through the afternoon.

    When the Lights Go On

As dusk settles, more than six million lights come on across the city at once, from the Parkway displays to the Old Mill district to the Wonders of Light walking trail along the Riverwalk Greenway. Fireworks close the evening. The lights stay up through mid-February, so the kickoff is worth attending for the atmosphere rather than as the only chance to see them.

    The Christmas Village

Opening night also starts the run of the Winterfest Christmas Village, a tent of artisan and craft booths at Patriot Park selling handmade and seasonal goods. It returns on selected dates through November rather than daily, so check the schedule if you are shopping rather than just browsing on the night.

    Getting There

Admission and parking are both free. The city’s Municipal and Mountain lots off Teaster Lane handle the overflow, and the trolley runs from the transit center at the park itself. Arrive by mid-afternoon if you want to eat from the trucks without a long line, or come closer to dark if you only care about the illumination and the fireworks. It is an outdoor event in November at the foot of the mountains, so dress for a temperature drop once the sun is behind the ridge.

This Year the Theme Is Favorite Tales

The 2026 route is built around nursery rhymes and classic storybook adventures, with larger-than-life character displays set out along the drive. Tune your radio to the show’s station and the lights change in time with the music while you roll through at a crawl. Younger kids tend to get the most out of this one, since they will spot a familiar character at nearly every turn.

Tickets Are Sold by the Carload

You pay once per vehicle, not per person, so a full minivan costs the same as two people in a sedan. Taxes and fees are added on top.

    • Standard ticket: $39.95, good on any night the show is open
    • Value ticket: $34.95, Monday through Thursday only, and not valid on Thanksgiving (Nov 26) or Dec 14 through Dec 24, when a standard ticket is required
    • Pre-season sale: at last check, the first standard pass was $29.96 and a second pass was $19.98

Tickets are good for one entry and are non-refundable. Season tickets are currently unavailable. You can buy ahead through the ticket link on Shadrack’s Sevierville page, or pay at the booth without leaving your car. The booth takes both cash and cards. Prices are from Shadrack’s official page as of October 2026 and can change.

Snowy Mountain Village After the Drive

Once you clear the last display, you can park and walk into the holiday village Soaky Mountain sets up inside the waterpark. Entry is free with your light show ticket, though some attractions cost extra. Expect bounce houses, yard games like Jenga, Connect 4 and cornhole, campfires, photo spots, food and desserts, souvenirs, and on select nights a visit from Santa or Boomer.

The village closes promptly at 10:00 PM, so if the kids want time there, drive the show early in the evening. The nightly schedule had not been posted as of early October. Soaky’s summer announcement said the village would run daily alongside the light show, while Shadrack’s page still describes it as select nights. Check Soaky’s website or call 833-687-6259 before you build an evening around it. Only service animals are allowed inside the village.

    Weather, Holidays and Getting There

The show runs every night of the season, rain or shine, holidays included, and weekend nights can stay open past 10:00 PM. The value ticket exclusions are a fair hint about which nights draw the biggest crowds, so a weeknight in late November or early December is the easier pick if your dates are flexible.

The drive route runs through the waterpark’s parking lot on Gists Creek Road. Wilderness at the Smokies, across the road, brings back ice skating during the same weeks if you want to stretch the night out. Shadrack’s posts an entrance map on its Sevierville page, and it is worth a look before you head over.

What Winterfest Looks Like at The Island

Once the sun drops behind the ridges, The Island becomes one of the brightest corners of Pigeon Forge. Millions of lights and more than a mile of garland wrap the shops and walkways, and the centerpiece is a 40-foot Christmas tree you can actually walk through. Strolling the property costs nothing and parking is free, so you spend money only on what you choose, whether that is dinner, a ride on the Wheel or a bag of stocking stuffers.

The lights are at their best after dark. Shops and rides normally open 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM Friday and Saturday, with holiday hours varying.

    The Holiday Fountain Show

The Show Fountain Courtyard is where most people end up. For Winterfest, the fountain performs alongside a set of choreographed 40-foot LED Christmas trees, with holiday shows every evening at 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM. On a Saturday in December, arriving a few minutes before the hour is worth it.

    Kick-Off Night on November 21

If your dates line up, opening night is the one to plan around. Santa arrives for photos at 5:00 PM, a free holiday concert starts at 7:00 PM, and the countdown to lighting the walk-through tree lands at 8:00 PM.

    Photos with Santa

Santa sets up near The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel on select dates only, so check the list before promising the kids:

    • Saturday, Nov 21: 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
    • Fridays and Saturdays, Nov 27 through Dec 19: 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM

His last visit is December 19, so families arriving the week of Christmas will miss him. Photo pricing is not posted online. Santa’s Toy Shop on the property carries keepsake ornaments, holiday plush and winter accessories if you need gifts on the way out.

The Wheel and the Rest of the Evening

The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel climbs 200 feet above the property, and a night ride puts the whole light display below you with the mountains beyond. Wheel and ride tickets are sold separately at the Ticket Center beside Timberwood Grill or online through The Island’s ticket site. Keep the weather in mind: some rides do not run below 40°F, rides can close for lightning or high winds, and tickets are not refunded. Leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds, though each business sets its own rule about pets inside.

    New Year’s Eve

December 31 brings a free concert and a midnight fireworks show, with the soundtrack simulcast on Knoxville’s WIVK 107.7 FM. The property stays open until midnight that night. After the holidays, the lights stay on through January 31.

    Parking and Getting There

Turn off the Parkway at The Island Drive light, between traffic lights 3 and 4. Free parking is in the LeConte Center lot, and a complimentary shuttle runs from the main lot to the front of The Island. Lot sections are signed by letter, so note yours before you walk away. The Island is open on Christmas Day, but hours may be reduced, so confirm before you go.

A Thanksgiving Week Tradition in Its 53rd Year

Gatlinburg’s Festival of Trees has opened the holiday season in town for more than half a century. Local businesses, organizations and Sevier County schools each take a tree or wreath and decorate it to their own theme, and the results fill the W.L. Mills Conference Center beside the convention center. Some trees are elegant, some are playful, and walking the rows takes exactly as long as you want it to. Admission is free.

Nearly everything on the floor is for sale, and that is the point. Tree and décor sales, plus donations at the door, fund the Boys & Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains and the Gatlinburg Chamber Foundation scholarship fund. The 2025 festival raised $70,000 for the club and $14,000 for the scholarship fund.

    What Families Will Find

The festival opens free to the public Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Children get a craft and play area, and Santa Claus sits for photos on Friday and Saturday only, from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM. If a Santa photo is the reason for the visit, build the day around those two windows, because he is not there the rest of the week.

The festival stays open on Thanksgiving Day itself, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. For families spending the holiday in a Gatlinburg cabin, it is an easy, free outing while the turkey is in the oven.

Candy Canes and Cocktails Preview Party

The night before the public opening, the festival hosts its preview party with light appetizers, signature drinks and a silent auction. Guests get first chance to buy trees before the doors open to everyone else. This is a separate ticketed event and is not included in free festival admission.

    • When: Tuesday, November 24, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
    • Tickets: $50 per person, sold through Eventbrite via the festival website
    • RSVP by: November 18, 2026
    • Ages: 21 and older only
    • Dress code: Festive cocktail attire
    • Refunds: Up to 7 days before the event

    Buying a Tree

Sold trees stay on display until the festival closes. In 2025, purchased trees were delivered to locations within Sevier County, so visitors from farther away should ask how pickup works before falling in love with one.

Getting There and Timing Your Visit

The conference center sits at traffic light #8 on Historic Nature Trail, connected to the Gatlinburg Convention Center. Sunday is the final day and closes early at 5:00 PM. The festival website does not list parking details, and Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest stretches of the year downtown, so allow extra time. Hours and Santa times come from the official schedule and can change, so check the festival site before you go.

    A Hayride Through the Lights

Once the pumpkin patch closes for the year, Darnell Farms decks out its land along the Tuckasegee River with holiday light displays and turns its hayride into a Christmas outing. The wagon moves slowly through the lights with music playing, an easy pace for small children and grandparents alike. For plenty of local families it is a once-a-year tradition, and it makes a relaxed evening plan after a day in the park or on the train downtown.

    What Comes with the Ride

The farm pitches this as a cozy, family-style evening rather than a big production. Expect:

    • Heated seating: the farm sets the ride up to keep guests warm on a cold mountain night.
    • Hot cocoa: a warm cup is part of the experience.
    • Santa: he is on the farm on hayride nights for visits and pictures, so bring a phone with some battery left.
    • Christmas music: it plays across the farm and along the light route.

In earlier seasons the ride also included a fresh fried pie. The farm has not said whether that carries over to 2026.

Christmas Trees and the Farm Stand

Fresh Christmas trees arrive at the farm the week of Thanksgiving, so the full selection is on the lot by the time the hayrides begin. Alongside the trees you will find wreaths, seasonal decorations and Christmas treats. The Farm Stand stays open through the holidays, so you can pick up a tree, some local jam or one of the farm’s DreamWhips on the same trip. Arriving a little before your hayride gives you time to shop without watching the clock.

    Booking and Timing

The hayrides start the day after Thanksgiving and run through New Year’s Eve, which makes this one of the few Christmas light outings in the area that carries on past the holiday itself. Rides take place in the evening, and online reservations have been required in past years. Nightly departure times and ticket prices for 2026 had not been posted as of October 10, so check darnellfarms.com before you build a trip around a specific date, and book early if you have your heart set on a particular evening.

    Before You Go

Heated seats help, but this is still an outdoor ride, and the river valley turns cold quickly once the sun drops. Dress the kids in layers and bring gloves. There are no hayrides on Christmas Day. Darnell Farms is on Governors Island Road, a short drive from downtown Bryson City.

An Old-Fashioned Start to the Season

Bryson City kicks off Christmas the way a small mountain town should, with neighbors gathered on a courthouse lawn waiting for a tree to light up. The tree stands in front of the 1908 courthouse that now houses the Visitor Center and Heritage Museum, and the whole evening is built around it. Carolers and a live nativity get things going an hour before the main moment, which gives you time to find a spot and let the kids warm up before the mayor lights the tree.

    What You Will Find There

    • Caroling and Live Nativity: Both begin before the lighting and give the crowd something to enjoy while it gathers.
    • Cookies and Hot Cocoa: Handed out free, which is welcome on a November evening in the mountains.
    • Letters to Santa: Children can write a letter and drop it in the mailbox right at the Visitor Center.
    • Family Photos: Families pose in front of the lit tree once the lights come on.

    Bring a Donation

Organizers ask guests to bring a non-perishable food item or an unwrapped toy. Donations go to local Swain County charities, so it is worth putting something in the car before you leave the cabin or hotel.

    Making a Night of It

The tree lighting falls on Shop Local Saturday, so the downtown storefronts are worth a walk before or after. Shops keep their own hours, so check with any store you have your eye on. The Chamber’s calendar also lists the drive-thru Christmas light show at the Great Smoky Mountains Event Park from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM on that date. If you are in town the following weekend, the Bryson City Christmas Parade takes over the streets on Saturday, Dec 5 at 2:00 PM.

    Parking and Getting There

Free parking has been available behind the courthouse, though downtown gets busy over Thanksgiving weekend, so plan to arrive early and walk the last couple of blocks. The ceremony is outdoors, so dress warmly.

A Hometown Tree Lighting on the Courthouse Lawn

Christmas at the Courthouse is Sevier County’s own start to the holiday season, and it has the feel of a small-town gathering rather than a tourist production. Sevier County Government held the first one in 2021, and it has grown every year since, filling the lawn of the 1895 courthouse in historic downtown Sevierville with local families, school choirs and visitors who happen to be in town that week.

The centerpiece is the lighting of the official Sevier County Christmas tree. Last year the tree was lit at 6:00 PM, early in the evening, so anyone coming mainly for that moment should plan to be on the lawn near the start rather than wandering in toward the end.

What Goes On Around the Tree

Most of the evening is relaxed and easy to drift through at your own pace. Here is what the event has offered:

    • Music: Christmas songs from local high school and junior high choirs.
    • Santa and Friends: photos with Santa, plus appearances from the Grinch.
    • Wagon Rides: Christmas-themed wagon rides, a favorite with younger children.
    • Kids’ Corner: face painting and children’s crafts.
    • Food and Gifts: hot cocoa and holiday treats, food trucks, and local vendors selling handmade Christmas gift items.

Food trucks and vendors sell their goods, so bring a little spending money even though the event itself is a free community celebration.

    Make a Weekend of It

This Thursday evening opens Sevierville’s Christmas weekend. Sevierville’s 64th Annual Christmas Parade steps off at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Dec 5, and its route turns onto Court Avenue right past the same courthouse, which is one of the best places to watch it. If you are staying in the area, the two events pair well.

The courthouse grounds are also home to the bronze statue of Dolly Parton, so the lawn makes a good photo stop while you are there. Sevierville’s Winterfest lights are up for the season as well, giving you something to drive through after the tree is lit.

    Parking and Getting There

Expect closed streets. Last year the City of Sevierville closed several downtown streets for the evening, and a similar setup is likely again. No parking guidance has been published for 2026, so give yourself extra time, be ready to park a few blocks out and walk in. December evenings in the foothills turn cold quickly after dark, and you will be outside the whole time, so dress for it.

    One Night Only

Gatlinburg has run this parade for more than fifty years and it has outgrown the phrase small town Christmas parade entirely. Roughly a hundred entries roll through downtown: lighted floats, high school and college marching bands from across the east, balloon handlers wrestling oversized characters between the storefronts, dancers, horses, and Santa bringing up the rear.

All of it moves under the million or so Winter Magic lights already strung along the Parkway. Crowd estimates run north of 80,000 people. It happens on the first Friday in December and does not repeat.

    Where to Stand

The route starts at Baskins Creek Bypass on East Parkway, runs to Traffic Light #3, turns south onto the Parkway, and finishes at Traffic Light #10. Any point along that stretch works, but the crowd thins toward the light #10 end and thickens badly near the television zone at light #3. Locals put folding chairs out along the Parkway days ahead of time, which tells you something about how early to claim a spot. Two to three hours ahead is not excessive. Arrive early!

    Grandstand Seating

If standing in a packed crowd is not appealing, the CVB sells reserved bleacher seats in advance for $50 per person:

    • Two locations, the television zone at Traffic Light #3 and the Gatlinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau near the middle of the route
    • Seating opens at 5:30 PM, two hours before step-off
    • A commemorative Gatlinburg Santa hat comes with each ticket
    • One child under age 5 may sit on a lap without a ticket
    • Strollers are not allowed in the grandstand and no stroller parking is provided

    Road Closures and Parking

Outbound East Parkway drops to one lane around 4:30 PM for float staging, the inbound lane closes near 6:50 PM, and the whole route shuts to traffic by about 7:00 PM. Be parked before 6:00 PM. Gatlinburg has several thousand public spaces, and most downtown hotels include parking for guests, which is the easiest way to do this if you are staying overnight. City officials light the Gatlinburg Christmas tree at Parkway Plaza at Traffic Light #3 at 7:25 PM, five minutes before the parade moves.

    If You Cannot Get There

The parade is taped and broadcast on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day across dozens of markets nationally, which is a decent consolation and also a reason the television zone section stays so full. Some of the cities where you may watch the parade on Christmas Day include Birmingham, AL, Chicago, IL, Charleston, SC, Hartford/New Haven CT, Hattiesburg, MS, Indianapolis IN, Knoxville, TN, New York, NY, New Orleans, LA, Washington, DC, Youngstown, OH.

    The Opposite of Gatlinburg’s Parade

Sevierville’s runs on Saturday morning in daylight, and that is the point. Where Gatlinburg goes big and televised, this one has run for more than sixty years as a genuine community parade: the Sevier County High School marching band, car clubs, church groups, Shriners, pageant winners waving from convertibles, baton twirlers, scout troops and about a hundred entries in total.

Santa closes it out. Both parades fall on the same weekend and plenty of visitors do both, which is easier than it sounds since one is Friday night in Gatlinburg and this is Saturday at 11:00 AM twenty minutes up the road.

    Where to Watch

The route leaves the First Baptist Church lot, goes north on Forks of the River Parkway, right onto Main Street, right onto Court Avenue and back to the start. Court Avenue in front of the old courthouse is the spot most regulars pick, with the historic buildings behind and room for kids to sit at the curb. The parade takes roughly an hour end to end but only about half that passes any single viewing point. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for a curbside spot and bring chairs.

    Road Closures

Sections of Court Avenue typically close at 9:00 AM, with South Honey Lane, the northbound Forks of the River Parkway lanes and the eastbound Main Street lanes closing around 10:45 AM. Traffic stays snarled downtown until about 1:00 PM. Park north or east of the route and walk in.

    Part of a Full Weekend

The parade sits inside Smoky Mountain Winterfest, and downtown Sevierville stacks its holiday events into this one weekend. The courthouse tree lighting runs Thursday evening, Gatlinburg’s parade is Friday night, and this is the Saturday morning finish. The outlets and downtown shops are geared up for it, which is either a bonus or a warning depending on your tolerance for December shopping traffic.

A Smoky Mountain Countdown Since 1987

Gatlinburg has dropped a ball from the Space Needle every New Year’s Eve since 1987, and the night has grown into one of the largest organized New Year’s Eve celebrations in the country. Tens of thousands of people fill the Parkway around traffic light #8 for live music, a drone show and fireworks launched from the top of the 407-foot tower. There are no tickets and nothing to pay. You just have to get there.

    The Mega LED Ball

The ball is the newest part of the tradition. The city debuted its 15-foot Mega LED Ball for the 2025 countdown, a little over 15 feet tall and close to 50 feet around. Gatlinburg bills it as the biggest and brightest New Year’s Eve ball in the world, and its drop of roughly 200 feet down the Space Needle as the longest anywhere. Whether or not you take the city at its word, it is a striking thing to watch come down the tower in the last minute of the year.

    How the Night Unfolds

    • Live concert: A band warms up the crowd for the first couple of hours. In 2025 it was MASTERPIECE Band ATL, a 10-piece show band from Atlanta playing everything from Motown to classic rock. The 2026 lineup has not been announced yet.
    • Drone show: At about 11:50 PM, choreographed drones light up the sky above the Gatlinburg Convention Center with images of the mountains and the town.
    • Midnight: The drones hand off to the ball drop and a fireworks finale fired from the top of the Space Needle.

    Where to Stand

The main viewing area is the intersection of the Parkway and Historic Nature Trail, right at the base of the Space Needle. The drone show plays out over the Convention Center just up Historic Nature Trail, so a spot near light #8 lets you see both without moving. The best positions go early. Dress for a cold mountain night, because you will be standing outside for a couple of hours, and families with small children may want a spot toward the edge of the crowd for an easier exit.

Road Closures, Parking and the Trolley

For the 2025 celebration, the city began closing roads at 10:30 PM:

    • Historic Nature Trail (Airport Road): Closed from the Parkway to Cloverleaf Lane.
    • Parkway: Closed in both directions from Reagan Drive and Maples Lane to LeConte Street, with detours via River Road.

Expect a similar plan this year, though the city normally confirms the details in late December. Downtown parking fills up hours ahead, and Gatlinburg police encourage everyone to arrive early. In past years the Gatlinburg Trolley has run extended hours on New Year’s Eve, staying in service for 90 minutes after the celebration ends. If that schedule holds, it beats trying to get a car out of a downtown garage at half past midnight. Check the city’s announcement before you count on it.
